Laser Safety for operation of a Nd Yag laser with 1.5 megawatts peak power output, on board Payload G-449 flown on the Shuttle Columbia Mission 61-C followed the NASA payload system safety requirements. As required by NASA, special attention was given to the safety analysis, hazard levels, hazard reduction and safety assessment reviews along with safety compliance data, and accident/incident/mission failures investigation and reporting parameters. The GAS payloads Safety Manual comprised the rationale for the integration process prior to loading the payload aboard the shuttle Columbia for Mission 61-C.
The Safety Policy and Requirements for Payloads using the Space Transportation System (STS) NHB 1700.7A, and Safety Policy and Requirements NSTS 1700.7B, along with the GAS Safety Manual comprised documents used for certifying that the G-449 payload and its support equipment would not endanger the orbiter, its crew or any ground system or personnel.
