This paper presents statistical information relative to the frequency of common laser safety problems found in research facilities. The data was accumulated over a three year period and was collected by various RLI personnel. Both corporate and governmental research facilities were involved in the studies. The audits include nearly 1500 lasers located in 400 difference laboratories. Specific areas investigated during this study include equipment compliance with the Federal Laser Product Performance Standard, entryway controls, eyewear, and other engineering control measures.
