At this time there is a need for administrative controls of the use of lasers by dentists that should include a formal process of certification. As these control measures are being developed there is also a need for a set of criteria to evaluate experience and training.
Most likely criteria for certification of “laser dentists” will follow from guidelines established within the community of laser surgeons (American Society for Laser Surgery and Medicine) and published as Appendix C of the “American National Standard for the Safe Use of Lasers in Health Care Facilities,” ANSI Z136.3.
