Over the last five years, the penetration of laser usage in the field of general surgery has expanded geometrically. This has come about for several reasons and is at least in part due to the fact that laser usage seems to offer benefits in patient care. The development of the Neodymium-YAG contact laser scalpel systems has brought common use of lasers to surgeons who did not want to bother with more cumbersome carbon dioxide lasers and the development of the laparoscopic cholecystectomy has greatly increased the use of lasers among general surgeons in the United States. We would expect this penetration to increase over at least the next five years.
