In the past few years, the laser has been used more and more by industry as a non-contact thermal processing procedure. The possibility of working with different materials, short change-over times for different working conditions, and high automation and integration possibilities in existing production lines are the main advantages of the tool laser. One main interest of research activities has become besides all the developments concerning material processing itself the laser safety and especially hazardous emissions. We review here the state of research in the Federal Republic of Germany.
