Rapid advancement in spectral beam combined, fiber-optic laser technology requires an appropriate response from safety professionals. The destructive capacity of these Directed Energy systems calls for engineering and administrative controls that transcend current guidance or regulations. OSHA’s General Duty Clause requires employers to furnish a work environment free from recognized hazards. Until regulations and standards are updated, employers must rise to the challenge, and enact safeguards accordingly. The Future of Laser Safety requires a new hazard category for weaponized lasers deemed immediately dangerous to life and health. The age of the Class 5 laser has arrived. Until regulations and standards catch up with the realities of current industry, industry must lead the way.
