High power LASER operation at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) produces a unique environment consisting of various types and energies of ionizing radiation. Ionizing radiation is produced through both fusion and LASER-induced material interactions. The types are dependent on the experimental platform. Shot time radiation may include energetic charged particles, neutrons, and a spectrum of photon energies.
NIF’s radiation environment represents a significant hazard to personnel in the form of both prompt and delayed radiation resulting from neutron activation. Both aspects are addressed through a robust engineering and administrative control program. This presentation will address ionizing radiation created at the National Ignition Facility and how occupational exposure is managed.
