The hazards associated with surgical plume are well documented and there are increasing numbers of regulations, standards, focused on mitigating the risks surgical team members are exposed to, during the course of their daily work in the OR. This presentation will introduce the relationship between risk assessment and the development of a risk based management program for surgical plume. It includes a brief review of the hazards and risks of exposure to surgical plume, a discussion of how to interpret current legislation, regulation, and standards as applicable to developing policy that will comply with them, and a sustainable and clinically relevant step-by-step plan for implementation of facility policy.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Discuss the cause and nature of the hazards associated with surgical plume and the risk to perioperative personnel of exposure to those hazards.

  2. Identify both current and developing evidence-based legislation, regulations, and standards, for mitigation of surgical plume in healthcare practice settings.

  3. Summarize the steps needed to develop a sustainable, practical, and clinically relevant implementation plan
