Objective: This presentation will focus on the Physicians requiring privileges to use lasers should first meet all institutional standards with respect to Board certification, specialty training, ethical character, good standing and judgment and have Laser Interventional privileges in the specialty before requesting laser privileges. Hospital privileges are and must remain the responsibility of the Medical Executive Committee and the Hospital Laser Safety Officer. The American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS) Standards of Training for Physicians for the Use of Lasers in Medicine and Surgery recommends that an applicant for hospital or other institutional privileges should be familiar with the pertinent literature and should have completed a basic training program devoted to the principles of lasers, instrumentation, physiological effects and safety requirements. The initial program should include clinical applications of various wavelengths in the particular specialty field and hands-on practical sessions with lasers and their appropriate surgical or therapeutic delivery systems. A list of recommendations to comply with the ANSI Z136.3 – 2018 Standard, TJC standards, and CMS regulations will be discussed to help Health Care Facilities ensure that the laser user providers who use lasers at their facilities have the documented training and experience with the specific laser systems and applications before granting laser use privileges.
