Laser safety guidelines are best based on experimental ED50 data obtained through dose-response measurements of laser-induced injury to ocular tissue and an understanding of the laser-tissue interaction mechanisms leading to injury. The form of CP, the pulse correction factor for repetitive-pulse exposure, has been based largely on data obtained by in-vivo exposure of NHP retina to collimated laser beams in studies performed from 35 to 50 years ago. In the past 20 years these data have been augmented by extended-source in-vivo exposures to NHP retina and by ex-vivo exposures to Bovine or Porcine retinal explants. This paper presents a review of these experimental data with the goal of improving understanding of the nature of CP.
