When building a new laser laboratory or retrofitting an existing one, design and planning up front can save significantly. Whether guaranteeing there are no potential viewing paths into the Laser Controlled Area (LCA), handling support utilities, or ensuring the proper placement of laser barriers, a well thought out LCA is a safe LCA. This paper will review some commonly overlooked and often not thought of hurdles to making your laser laboratory safe. Additional guidance is also provided to help you avoid the pitfalls in setting up a laser laboratory.
