Dazzling and high-powered laser pointers are increasingly available. The FDA on Dec 16, 2010 issued a safety notification alerting consumers about the risk of eye and skin injuries from high-powered laser pointers. Lasers are now available with output powers above 5 mW for prices as low as $10. These lasers have been referred to as dazzling lasers because of the brightness of their initial visual effect. The FDA has issued warnings on the use of these devices. Advertisements and videos on YouTube and the Web portray the fun uses of these lasers, such as lighting cigarettes and popping balloons. Better publicity is needed for the hazards and safe use of these lasers. This paper will review the reports of lasers in the news, as well as the threats, hazards and concerns about the increasing use of—high-powered laser pointers.” These now increasingly available lasers are a significant threat to flight safety, and to eye health.
