In order to explore the alternative use of cynomolgus (Macaca fasicularis) as a substitute for the ubiquitous rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) as a model for retinal damage, a series of “bridging” experiments utilizing visible lasers (413 nm, 532 nm and 647 nm) has been initiated. Exposure conditions conducive to both photochemical and photothermal damage mechanisms have been explored with parameters that were similar to those used in previous studies which had employed the rhesus model. The damage threshold results of past and current studies around these three wavelengths are compared here and recommendations for additional studies are indicated.
