The author recounts his experience in ascertaining laser use regulations on a state-by-state basis. He concludes state laser regulation is more widespread and varied than expected; and there is no comprehensive reference available to laser safety professionals. He recommends the Laser Institute of America consider a project using volunteer laser safety professionals to establish and maintain such a reference for the membership at-large.
