Usual Laser guards fulfill the requirements for laser safety for industrial use of CO2- and Nd:Yag high power lasers. Thermal convection, radiation and heat diffusion are discussed as temperature reduction mechanisms. Due to the 4th order of the Stefan-Boltzmann-law, limitation of temperature is very efficient. With ultra short pulsed lasers, new requirements to laser guards arise. High peak intensity leads to nonlinear effects within the optical cavity, the beam path and the working zone. New risks arise from all three areas.
