All steel sandwich panels are at present under extensive research and new applications are studied. Helsinki University of Technlogy (HUT)/Ship Laboratory and Laserplus have conducted co-operative research to develop design methods and production technology for these type of structures since 1994. The topics studied include e.g. ultimate strength analysis, joint design and fatigue strength analysis, fire and noise testing. A special computer program is developed to optimise the design solutions for sandwich panels with various core structure configurations. The program developed is briefly summarised in this paper and few case studies are conducted to compare the weight optimised design solutions. Finally the production methods and possible problem areas applying laser welding for these panels are discussed.
