A universal laser hardening system comprised of a 2.4 kW diode laser and a 2.0 kW YAG laser is presented. Both lasers employ a zoom optic to provide a variable line shaped focus. They can be operated simultaneously and are coupled by a dichroic mirror before a common focusing lens to increase the intensity on the work piece. A fully CNC-controlled gantry-type motion system consisting of five motorized and two manual axes for 3D-processing has been engineered to industrial standards. Hardening experiments on medium carbon steel have been performed.
