Magnesium alloys are experiencing a renaissance in light body structures. This metal, in the most interesting form of die-castings, as well as extrusion-profiles and sheet-metal products, offers a high potential in the production of modular light-weight structures. Laser beam welding allows, in comparsion to conventional welding technics like MIG- and TIG-welding, a low thermal load when joining the components. It also allows allows for good automation and highly productive joining of magnesium alloys, both with the same and with different composition. This technique guarantees a high number of possible joint types with a constant processing quality. In this paper, a summary of the existing work on laser beam welding of magnesium alloys is presented. The mechanical-technological properties of the joints are characterised, and the possibilities of industrial use are presented.
