This paper is a brief description of a type of Laser drilling application developed under the DARPA-Precision Laser Machining program for fuel systems of diesel engines. Experiments were conducted on four different types of Lasers by drilling holes using a trepanning operation on stainless steel coupons. In each case, the geometrical and metallurgical aspects of the holes were compared. The work was performed on flat coupons of heat treat hardened 52100 material. The purpose was to determine the influence of various parameters on recast layer, heat affected zone, taper, roundness and surface texture. The paper highlights the main technical issues in trepanning operations and the need for collaborative development of Laser applications.
