Ultrashort laser pulses (100 fs and 520 ps) were applied to drill and cut alloys and ceramic materials in an effort to further expand the pulse width and peak intensity regimes in industrial laser applications. Significant reduction in recast layer formation, microcracking, and heat affected zones were observed with the femtosecond laser pulses. The ultrashort laser pulses have definite advantages in the preservation of parent material properties after machining.
