A study was conducted to asses the laser welding behavior of steels containing nickel, chromium and molybdenum. AISI 4000 series steels were welded in conduction mode by using a medium power carbon dioxide laser. The welds were characterized by conducting hardness and tension tests and by examining the absorptivity, temperature profiles and microstructure of the weld zone, heat affected zones and the base metal. The data on the size of the heat affected zone and absorptivity determined from transient temperature profiles were in good agreement with the corresponding size determined by optical microscopy and emissivity estimated from the electrical properties of the steel respectively. Experimental data on the effects of various laser welding parameters, such as laser power, welding speed, specimen thickness and type and flow rate of cover gas on the extent of melting, size of the heat affected zone and temperature are discussed in details in this paper.
