The results of the work on precision material removal of structural ceramics and 304 steel using pulsed Nd:YAG laser are presented. The effects of processing parameters such as incident energy, pulse duration, pulse overlapping on the material removal rate and surface finish are discussed. The material removal rates are established using both single and multiple pulse overlapping conditions. Surface roughness values in the order of 0.35 μm were obtained in the case of Si3N4 based materials. Pulse overlap machining of 304 steel is also reported.
