We present an experiment for the observation and evaluation of the guided modes of a step-index optical fiber with a small V-number. The observed spatial patterns are presented and compared with theoretical predictions. Methods for filtering subsets of modes from the multimode field are discussed. The divergence of the spatial patterns for different modes are compared.
