Heat transfer efficiencies (HTE) and melting efficiencies (ME) were measured to determine the effects of plume suppression in argon-shielded laser-beam welding (LBW) of 6.35-mm-thick AISI 1018 carbon steel. The CO2 laser power was maintained at 1.7 kW and was focused by a 127-mm focal length zinc-selenium lens. The gas jet location ranged from 0 to 15.9 mm above the surface, and the welding travel speed was varied from 4.23 to 16.9 mm/s. A series of welds was made using thin ceramic plates to insulate the base metal surface near the weld from the plume radiation. The plume radiation passed through various broadband filters prior to measurement.
