Developments in the instrumentation technique of Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) during the previous decade now permit application to large scale engineering test facilities. The ability of PLIF to provide instantaneous, spatially-resolved measurements of property distributions such as species concentration, temperature, or, in more advanced implementations, velocity and pressure, represents a large step forward in available experimental technique. This paper focusses on the application of the PLIF technique to species concentration imaging in engineering test facilities. Issues associated with application of PLIF instrumentation to large facilities, including hardware options, quantification of image data, environmental insensitivity, and facility requirements are discussed and solutions offered.
