The special properties of a laser beam, notably its focusability and the ease with which it can be directed, provide unique opportunities in the field of welding. For the potential economic and quality-based advantages of laser welding to be fully exploited, product designers must be aware of these opportunities at the design stage of manufacturing. Such knowledge enables the designer to work with the product’s function, rather than its manufacturing method, uppermost in his mind. Case studies of axle - pulley and axle - gear combinations illustrate the unique possibilities offered to the designer.
