Laser Speckle Velocimetry (LSV) is used effectively to measure fluid velocity components. However, pointwise analysis of LSV specklegrams provides only discrete two-dimensional data which must then be differentiated to obtain vorticities or divergences. A finite-element smoothing method is well suited for this purpose. The combined experimental-numerical concept is demonstrated here by analyzing a transient convective fluid-flow associated with a descending plume.
