The feasibility of predicting and controlling laser processes such as cutting, welding, heat treating, cladding, and chemical vapor deposition from surface temperature data is investigated. The study consisted of experimental investigations by the authors as well as a literature review of past studies. The problems associated with high-speed surface temperature measurement are discussed and some possible solutions are presented. Further research that is required before any laser process can be completely monitored by surface temperature is also discussed.
