Many technically important applications involve low Mach number (M<0.3) gas flows, which are essentially incompressible. By substituting a liquid for the gas and ensuring dynamic similitude, such flows can be studied more conveniently. The advantages and simplifications that result from employing water analog simulation are reviewed and illustrated as they apply to experiments on in-cylinder flow during the intake process of a piston engine.
