Triangulation based machine vision systems, currently installed, are providing levels of automation never before achievable with traditional technology. One such system, the MV-300, was designed and built to implement Statistical Process Control for sheet metal assembly. The sequence of steps leading to the development of the MV-300 started with an in-depth market study. This study served to constrain the scope of the problem, and isolate the capabilities required for a real solution to this important manufacturing problem. Product development efforts focused on the creation of a modular, flexible, and user-friendly system. This paper presents a case study on the transition from market study to successful plant floor application.
