Light from lasers (light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation) have been used in medicine to treat a number of special problems since recognition in 1960 that the light generated by laser instruments could be utilized as surgical knives. The high cost of the new laser blade discouraged its use. Therefore the movement to identify where and when laser use was advantageous has been a slow but a continually growing new medical modality. The veterinarian has been even slower than the physician to find favorable applications for these new instruments. This paper will address why the veterinary profession has been slow to recognize the value of laser technology, the current status of veterinary laser medicine and the future of veterinary laser medicine.
