The Neodymium, Yttrium, Aluminum, Garnet(Nd YAG) laser emits an invisible wave length of 1.06 microns. A Helium laser superimposes a red light to spot the tissue. The light can be delivered by a hand gun or via a quartz fiber that can be passed through an endoscopic channel. The laser beam is only partially absorbed by hemoglobin and water but penetrates 5-7 mms. into dark tissue protein. It can effectively coagulate fairly large vessels and ablate tissue. It is a fair cutting tool separating the lesion from the underlying rectal muscles and keeping the operative field dry by coagulating vessels thus preserving the specimen for pathology. It can vaporize large bulky tumors.
