Spectroscopic measurements utilizing photoacoustic (PA) or other photothermal (PT) detections have continued to gain importance in the last ten years. The reasons include the following. First, PA or PT measurements can be performed on “difficult” samples like highly opaque or high transparent materials where conventional transmission measurements either fail or require extensive sample preparation procedures. Secondly, high sensitivities for detecting optical absorptions have been demonstrated. Thirdly, depth-profiling measurements are possible, providing information on layered structures. Fourthly, extension to remote sensing applications is possible for certain PT measurements.
