Computerized instrumentation is rapidly becoming the best method for precise, automated maximization of coupled light into fibers (i.e. pigtailing of single mode laser diodes). The Polytrope 1000, interfaced with an I.B.M. P.C., is such an instrument, providing .1 micron fiber positioning accuracy. The software controlled closed loop system assures reproducible optimization of light coupling.

The Polytrope 1000 system will be examined in three parts; 1) the software, which simplifies user interface while assuring engineering flexibility and specific component adaptation, 2) the electronic modules, which are I.B.M. compatible, microprocessor driven and expandable, 3) the mechanisms, which provide up to nine axis of computer controlled high resolution movement.

A review of basic alignment parameters and coupling loss mechanisms will be presented.
