One of the fundamental components of a laser beam recorder is an optical modulator, a device which converts an electronic video signal into a corresponding modulation of a laser beam. Optical modulators are required for systems using lasers which lack satisfactory internal modulation capability In most printers the modulation is a temporal modulation: i. e., the modulator acts as an extremely fast electronically actuated light switch.
