Military communication systems often require the transmission of an independent analog voice orderwire in addition to the regular main data traffic. Even though the main traffic is digital, the superposition of a voice signal, digitized or undigitized, requires the channel to be more than just binary. Therefore, in applications of fiber optic technology to these systems, the channel’s non-linearity must be characterized.
