Stimulating fluorescence by synchronous application of pulsed UV laser light is used to measure surface temperatures of rotating objects. The temperature dependence of the lifetime of selected emission lines from a phosphor bonded to the surface provides temperature resolution, in the room temperature range, of about 0.3°C. The experimental technique includes fiber optics transfer of stimulating and signal light, timing circuitry, photomultiplier electronics, and waveform processing.
