In an effort to optimize penetration in high power laser beam welding the following four aspects have been investigated: (1) the relationship between the external telescope positions and image points; (2) weld penetration as a function of the nozzle distance of the plasma suppressing gas; (3) penetration vs nozzle size relationship; and (4) the effect of the shield’s height on penetration at various power levels.
