Laser surface melted specimens of 420 and 316 stainless steels were subjected to slow scan rate (20mV/min) polarisation testing in a dilute chloride environment. The results were compared with the polarisation curves of the conventionally heat treated material subjected to the same test. The results are interpreted in terms of the structural segregation and stress effects produced by laser surface melting.
