To safely use laser energy intra-abdominally, the surgeon must have the proper instruments. In 1980, when I first became interested in the intra-abdominal application of the CO2 laser for infertility surgery, there was a dearth of information about proper laser surgical instruments. Thus, in conjunction with American V. Mueller, Inc., Chicago, Illinois, available stainless steel instruments were modified and new instruments were categorized as: abdominal laser instruments, micro-laser instruments, and McLaughlin laser rods and mirrors.
