The use of flexible wave guides as delivery systems for surgical lasers first occurred in the fields of gastroenterology, pulmonary medicine and otolaryngology. In the past two years pilot studies of flexible wave guides as laser delivery systems have been reported for urologic surgery. Recently, several reports have described the use of laser-coupled flexible wave guides in the field of gynecology.
