Automation of arc welding requires a scientific understanding of the transport phenomena occurring during the joining process. To monitor these arc transport processes a unique holographic interferometric technique has been developed. This technique employs multi-pass reconstruction of the flow field coupled with novel schemes for reference hologram preparation. This technique has been successfully used under laboratory welding conditions. The results of these preliminary measurements are discussed.
