Walt Disney’s Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, EPCOT Center, opened on October 1, 1982 with an interactive video information service for park visitors. Visitors can interact with a computer and videodisc players to get stored information or can establish a two way video link with a human attendant. The required services, environmental situation, and potential expansion plans made this an ideal application for an optical communications system carrying video, graphics, control data, voice, and music signals. If experience in this Prototype Community is an accurate indicator the community of tomorrow will have similar services.
