Hermetic coatings, applied on-line to optical fibers as they are drawn, provide resistance to stress and humidity-induced mechanical failure under severe environmental conditions. Lifetimes an order of magnitude longer than conventional fiber have been demonstrated, and continuous kilometer lengths of high strength fiber have been drawn.
