Interest in monomode fibres has increased dramatically during the last few years. This interest was spurred by the announcement in 1979 of “ultimate” low loss monomode fibre, by workers at NTT [1]. The last year has seen some very significant advances in the design and fubrication of monomode fibres throughout the world, and the aim of this review is to summarise this progress.
