This paper is a brief technical and historical overview of scanning laser beam dimensional gauges. Some of the principal capabilities are presented and illustrated with a comparison to another optical approach, the linear array camera. The performance level of the latest generation sensors is presented and compared to previous generation laser scanning gauges and to linear array sensors.
