Several recent incidences during laser surgery procedures may suggest a need for more comprehensive understanding of the existing recommended safety procedures and, in addition, training of the laser surgery personnel. New detailed recommendations for laser safety were published in 1980 by the American National Standard Institute (ANSI) in the publication “For the Safe Use of Lasers” ANSI Zl36.1 upon which existing Federal and the New Proposed Model State Legislation are based. Excerpts of this publication are quoted to alert the laser surgeon to pertinent safety recommendations.
