Surgical application of the laser beam is one of the more significant advances in medicine in the past two decades. My remarks will be confined to gynecological diseases of the female, and the application of the laser in the treatment of the diseases related to the female. Because of different living standards and freer life styles, there has been a marked increase in sexually transmitted diseases of the young female. These abnormalities include pre-cancerous lesions of the cervix, vulva, and vagina, as well as herpes and condyloma acuminatum. Approximately 3-6% of the pap smears taken of young reproductive age females are abnormal, and a large number of these are considered to be pre-cancerous abnormalities. If left untreated these conditions could develop into invasive cancer, causing serious and potentially fatal results.
