The aim of this paper is to discuss metallurgical and process considerations which arise in the welding of structural and stainless steels. Two topics are addressed in each material type. In the structural steel, we discuss first the use of filler to control problems of fit-up and metallurgy, and second some thick-section autogeneous welds are considered, particularly their impact properties. In the stainless steels, the emphasis is placed on fabrication of specific component shapes and we discuss first aspects concerned with closure of circular welds, and second an application in which the low, reproducible shrinkage and distortion has been exploited.
