Bright and dissimilar metals present unique challenges to joining as a result of high reflectivity in the near infra-red causing periodic coupling events, splatter, and/or defects. In this presentation, results are presented on joining solutions for thin sections of bright and dissimilar metal-alloys with nanosecond pulsed lasers. This approach is in contrast to current approaches to joining, where more conventional welding methods are used for bright-dissimilar metals using other laser welding solutions. This paper will focus on an alternative laser beam joining method through the use of nanosecond pulsed fiber lasers.
